Carli was launched in 1961 by Bruce Clark for cruising in the Hauraki Gulf. She is single skin heart kauri and initially had a 3/4 rig. Bruce Clark then lived in Invercargill but he
would come up for six weeks to cruise in the summer.
Carli stayed in Auckland and was maintained by his friend John Bull of Glendowie. Bruce Clark then moved up to Auckland in 1972 and designed a larger yacht Bintang.
He sold Carli to Bunty Palmer, who, with his family cruised the Gulf and the Bay of Islands keeping her off their bach at Kawau, and at Westhaven in the winter.
Bunty and his son, Warwick now as part owner, gave Carli a major refit in 1979. This included an aluminium mast and boom. Previously with a fractional rig she was
given a masthead rig with a slightly smaller and more manageable mainsail. The Palmers noticed that she was ‘more lively’ with the aluminium spar. Reluctantly the Palmers sold her in 1991 to John Hood.
Carli is now based in Wellington and owned by Jeff Kennedy.
