Freedom of Leigh was built of GRP by Tim Gurr, Peter Sowman and Gray Dixon at Ocean Racing Yachts on the North Shore of Auckland - commissioned by Reg and Maureen Thomas who resided in Leigh. She has made numerous trips offshore including the Tauranga-Vila race in 1976, 1978 and
1980 and the Auckland - Lautoka race in 1977. After six years of ownership the Thomas’ reluctantly decided to sell Freedom.
Sue and Kevin Williams purchased her in 1981 for family cruising in the Hauraki Gulf and Bay of Islands.
In 1995 after numerous nautical miles and beautiful bays Freedom needed a facelift. The "facelift" became a five year extensive restoration under the supervision of Marine surveyors Kitney Associates. The original designer Alan Mummery also helped with the new retrousse walkthrough stern. She is still based in Auckland with the Ponsonby Cruising Club.
Three Mummery 54’s have been built; Freedom of Leigh, Ponsonby Scow, both schooners and the ketch Challenge.
