Katrina II is one of the last of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron K Class yachts, and is a New Zealand registered ship. She was commissioned by and built for the late Jim Faire, an Olympic games sailing representative and at the time Commodore of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. As the Commodore’s yacht she had an illustrious racing period between 1950 and 1970.
Designed by Bob Stewart she was the last and fastest of his four K Class yachts. Katrina II was built using traditional methods by the legendary Percy Vos, and has a triple skin heart kauri hull. The framing is also heart kauri throughout, with solid teak and mahogany finishing. The fastenings are all
solid bronze. The K Class was the result of a design competition held by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron in the late 1940s. All K Class boats were 41ft long with a 27ft 6in max waterline, had to accommodate five adults in comfort and exceed Lloyd’s specification in the scantlings and hull strength.
The current owner, Warren Tuohey, purchased the boat recently and cosmetic work has already been undertaken to get the boat water tight and looking good.
